·We got a distant view of Kirkenes as we descended (and the weather closed in). We didn't visit Kirkenes, which is not supposed to be especially attractive. Its biggest business is iron mining. In WWII there were 100,000 German troops here, and as convoys to aid the Russians were sailing by to the ice-free port of Murmansk this town was one of the most heavily bombed sites of the war.
