In 1348 it became one of the most important towns in the Byzantine empire, the seat of the regional Despot of Morea. Mystra continued under Ottomans and Venetians - at its peak it had 40,000 inhabitants. Many of the well-preserved old buildings are churches, built in Byzantine style.
