The Antikythera Mechanism (34cm x 18cm), found in 1901 on a 2nd C BC shipwreck off the island of Antikythera, has an elaborate array of 30-odd gears, apparently for making celestial predictions, e.g. eclipses. Strangely, no old texts mention any such device.
