We took a day trip to nearby Mérida to see the most extensive Roman remains in Spain. Founded in 24BC, at the junction of Roman roads to Seville, Salamanca, Toledo and Lisbon. This is the Moorish Alcazaba (9th C), built to defend the old Roman bridge (next photo).
