The church is an austere mixture
of Romanesque and Gothic. The wonder of this impressive complex of church
and other abbey buildings,
called the Merveille (Marvel) since 1228, is not so much its inherent beauty as the
huge engineering feat
of building it all on top of a needle of rock.
